I believe this week coming up is the last week of the semester at CCS before winter break, so all the students should be finishing up with finals and Senior Prom and all that.
If you're interested in participating in a mini-marathon, probably over the break, of semi-popular British sci fi sitcom Red Dwarf, post to this thread with ideas for a venue / favorite episodes / miscellaneous.
I was thinking the Colodny building, upstairs so that people can still use the lab.
If we do it over the break, some people may not be able to participate, so that is a downside. But what can ya do?
If we do it at someone's house, we could go all out and have Indian food and lager. If we do it at the school we could have Indian food, but no lager, obviously. Maybe an Indian food pot luck?
To get it started, I suggest the pilot episode and one of my favorite episodes, "Holoship." What can I say, I'm a hopeless romantic at heart.

So - the event - it just begs out for curry! The pot luck part sounds excellent! Lager would be fantastic, too (is there any way, if we do it over break, we could work on a "you bring it in, you take it out" beer policy? Then the stuff is there with us, leaves with us, no residuals? We're adult enough to deal with this, damnit.)
If we're stuck beer-free, and looking for a change of pace, we could try the Verizon lounge. They've got a bigger fridge, microwave, and we could bring in a better coffeemaker or something.
Finally, I know my place is a bit out of the way, but I'd offer it for the showing (but it needs to be after Jan. 1, on a Saturday or something, once we get the Christmas tree out of the TV room.)

For those unfamiliar with Red Dwarf, it's a British sci fi sitcom from (mostly) the 90s. The main characters are Dave Lister, the last human alive; Arnold Rimmer, his hologrammatic bunkmate / worst enemy / only friend; and Cat, a humanoid evolved from cats. Other cast members drop in and out, like Holly, the slightly deranged computer who controls the ship; and Kryten, a slightly wacked-out, prissy android know-it-all.
The rest of the crew of the mining ship Red Dwarf were wiped out 3 million years ago, and the human race is most likely extinct.
Hijinks ensue!

I'm in. And if nothing else, we've got to show Quarantine.

I've never seen it before, so no favorites (yet?!), but I'm willing to give it a go.

From the other board:
morgan
Yay! Red Dwarf-o-thon!!
mattYoung
What about this weekend? Friday or Sat? Wait. Saturday's the holiday party. Sunday? What else? Is that too much cooking too close together?
Otherwise... after the 1st? First weekend of the new year?
How does mango juice go with Indian food?
BryanStone
i'd totally be into that. the whole series is great but I really love the first few episodes...the one where rimmer poses as kristine kochansky is especially good. in other words i'm in.
also, i'd talked with some people about showing some studio ghibli movies soonish...but i'll wait til you guys schedule this to schedule that.
word!

Dennis, you've got these on DVD or something, right? What if we tried to watch the first couple episodes of season 1 this weekend (Sunday was good for Colleen, works for me, too), and then plan a second one for the first weekend of the new year with Indian food?
Because there can't be too many ways to start a new year better than with Indian food!

Awesome, Bryan!!
Matt may be on to something here--having one Dwarf-o-thon this Sunday and one sometime in January, but I don't want to be greedy and take away from other people's events. Let's plan on one for now.
But there are just so many good episodes! I was thinking of starting out with the Pilot ("The End"), then hopping around the timestream. We've got votes for "Balance of Power" (Bryan), "Quarantine" (Colleen), and "Holoship" (Me). Here are some more of my faves to get your wheels turning, y'all who haven't picked one yet:
-Future Echoes -Queeg -Backwards -White Hole -Dimension Jump -Meltdown -Back to Reality -Gunmen of the Apocalypse
To answer Matt's question, I don't have them on DVD--I have them on VHS. But if you think about it, that just adds to the whole low-production-values aesthetic of the show, right? Heh heh, right? Guys?
(Except, I don't have Series 5 Byte 2 (Quarantine) so I'm going to have to Netflix that. So at least one episode will be on funky groovy DVD.)
What does everybody think of the Indian food pot luck idea? We may have to nix that part of it if we do it the same weekend as the CCS holiday party. Two pot lucks in one weekend is one too many.
Okay, so that settles it. Everything except for 1-The venue 2-The food (pot luck or no pot luck? Lager or no lager? Mango juice?!) 3-The date and time (this Sunday or some time in January? Or both?) 4-The episodes
Here are my thoughts: 1-As far as venue goes, the school may be the most convenient for everybody, and I think they have all the audio and video equipment we might need. 2-If it's on this Sunday, then we won't have to debate the lager/no lager question, since there won't be a pot luck aspect and the school has a no-alcohol policy, too. 3-The date and time-This Sunday, early afternoon? Like 2-ish? 4-We'll need to talk about which episodes we'll show, and possibly vote. But I think 4 episodes will be just fine, with an intermission after the first 2, and we'll see how people feel after that.
Thoughts?

How about this? Red Dwarf-athon after the potluck! We'll have beer and food a plenty! I may be too full and tipsy to move, which might be what it takes to make me watch this show (I'm sorry, but I just don't get it.)

That's a good idea. I could bring curry to the potluck. And a good way to take advantage of the one day when lager is allowed at CCS

The Dwarf-athon is on!
I've got Bryan's ok, so let's watch some Red Dwarf after the CCS potluck.
What's the line-up?

The First Official Dwarf-o-thon was a great success! Thank you all for making it happen. I had a great time, and I hope you all did too.
