I had to deliver some course surveys today, so I had the good fortune to briefly sit in on Jason Lute's critique session. It looked like a positive and constructive session, and I wish there was something like that I could be part of. Are any alumni feeling the same? Non-CCS cartoonists?
I know it's really hard to make WRJ cartoonist groups outside of CCS happen, but dammit, I'm willing to give it another try! Is anyone interested?
I know Jon-Mikel (and others) have trouble drawing in a group or party setting. It can be difficult! But here's an idea, why not regular critique sessions?
My friend Jon Lewis used to get together with a whole bunch of Seattle cartoonists (Tom Hart, Ed Brubaker, and Jason too now that I think of it) for regular critique sessions (at a bar, I think). I always liked that idea.
So there's the idea - getting together to help improve our work. Trying to replicate some of the benefits of a classroom outside the classroom. I've been working in a vacuum too long!
So what do you think? And of course, this would be open to current students, if they’re not all critiqued-out from class.
I think we just need a few steadfast members to make it happen. Maybe we could invite some faculty to attend?

Well, I'm definitely in. I think this is a great idea. When I was at SVA I used to get together with my friends Liz and Joe every week to critique each other's work (and make sure we were all working). I haven't done it in a while.
I feel like I've been working in a vacuum a bit, too. I'm too close to my work and I start to lose my perspective (so to speak). "Is this any good? Am I wasting time here? What's working and what isn't? Why did the bad man touch me?" These are all question we all ask ourselves as cartoonists.
I don't know about a bar. Elixir is out (too dark, too expensive). Other bars are also pretty dark. A weekly meeting at someone's house, maybe? A rotating venue. A few steadfast members is all it needs to keep it going.

How about Revolution? Or the WRJ Writing Center, if they're up for it.
We could do people's houses, too.

I'm down with Revolution, if they're down with me.
What is the WRJ writing center?
